I was dissuaded from seeing Sucker Punch in theaters because all of my friends super sensitive sexist meters went off after they saw the commercials for it. All I heard whenever I said I wanted to see it was, “oh my god, are you serious? The blatant Lolita sexy school girl outfits and the innocence is fucked up and not okay.”
They are absolutely right.
Which is probably why they’d be confused if they saw the movie and realized that, HEY!, the movie AGREES!
What they didn’t understand was that the movie dressed them like that to further show the villainy of those who took advantage of them. It also dressed them like that so that they could take their innocence and their abuse and their trauma and then use those setbacks to get out.
Another really cool thing about this movie was that you barely ever saw what was going on in the mental institution really. You saw a girl’s perception of it which was, essentially, living in a brothel where the pimp (a corrupt orderly) wouldn’t let anyone leave. It was an interesting take that her escape included her being more willing to have her body abused against her will instead of her past and her mind.
These girls were put in the damsel in distress scenario. But what so many people didn’t see was thatthey empowered themselves to try and escape.
Also, the CGI is fucking superb and it has a fantastic soundtrack. See this fucking movie.
I find this Steampunk genre to be quite interesting, and these models have a certain erotic vibe.
Boom! Sucker Punch-esque steam punk babes!
